Values and Ethos

Our vision: Expectation, Aspiration and Respect for All

As Rights Respecting Schools, our ethos focuses very much on developing and valuing individuals as we believe there are no limits to what a child can achieve. We have high expectations of our pupils and aim to develop learners who are aspirational, proud of their achievements and are active participants in their own learning. As small schools we consider ourselves to be a family and together we strive to offer a happy, secure and stimulating learning environment which embraces honesty and respect.

We would like our schools, which reflect British values, to be at the heart of their Cornish communities. We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life enabling them to become confident, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults who make a difference to British society and to the wider world.

At our federation we encourage our children to take ownership of their own learning and to participate in whole school life by placing important rights at the heart of every decision. We value the:

  • right to learn;
  • right to develop our individual skills and talents;
  • right to be listened to and to have our opinions heard;
  • right to be treated fairly and the same as everyone else;
  • right to be healthy and to be safe;

We encourage everyone in our school community to respect these rights through our high expectations. To achieve our vision we expect everyone to:

  • try their best in all they do;
  • be aspirational in setting targets and goals;
  • have a positive attitude and make sure we do not interrupt others in their learning;
  • listen to the view of others even though we may not agree;
  • respect our learning environment and equipment;
  • be kind to others and treat others as we would expect to be treated;

As part of embedding our ethos in school to achieve this vision, we are a level 1 Rights Respecting School. This means that we place the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at the heart of our school ethos and curriculum. The CRC is embedded into our curriculum through Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development. We ensure that pupils understand the convention in terms of their own community here in Cornwall, British society and across the wider world.

NOTE: OUR SCHOOLS ARE CHANGING THE VISION AND ETHOS STATEMENT IN JANUARY 2023 (please see Vision and Ethos on the main menu tab).

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) Policy
OUR VISION IS CHANGING
We are currently in the process of updating our Vision Statement ; the current statement has been with us a number of years, but we feel it time to bring it up to date with what our school represents and the ever-changing world.
Our school governor working party is in the process of asking all stakeholders (including our pupils) to suggest words which they feel are important to them. School leaders and Governors will then take these words and re-write the schools vision statement in the early part of 2023.
